Extended Matrix Community on Facebook

Nowadays Extended Matrix Community is born, a community on Facebook for Archaeologists, 3D modelers and developers who deal with virtual reconstructions in archaeology with the #ExtendedMatrix approach.

Oggi nasce Extended Matrix Community su Facebook per Archeologi, modellatori 3D e sviluppatori che si occupano di ricostruzioni virtuali in archeologia con l’approccio #ExtendedMatrix.

Extended Matrix 1.1 is out

After an year and a half of work, the Extended Matrix 1.1 is out.

  • full support to 3D modelling (Proxy models, Representation models, Snapshots)
  • EM workflow standardisation (data collection, analysis and outputs).
  • Guidelines for scientific publication of a re-construction hypothesis
    • Report of virtual activities (for non technical users), Dossier Comparatif (source collection and organisation)
  • New conventions
  • and much more..

Starting from this version, along every new EM, there is a EMF Extended Matrix Framework which includes tools and software to make the use of the Extended Matrix approach smoother and more effective.

The EMF 1.1 includes:

  • EMviq tool, designed and developed by Bruno Fanini, which provide a complete visualisation and interrogation context within the framework.

Full change-log can be found here.

Preprints of the reference paper for EM 1.1, published in the “Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports” can be found here or in the Downloads section.

EM used in the Swedish Pompeii Project

In the last two years, EM has been used to track the reconstruction processes of the House of Caecilius Iucundus. This virtual reconstruction is part of the Swedish Pompeii Project and it has been presented in 2015 as a 3D stereoscopic movie at the Millesgården Museum in Stockolm. Recently it has appeared a paper on the italian journal SCIRES that explain the whole process how EM has been used. The original paper can be downloaded here or in the download section.

Extended Matrix reference site is online

After weeks of work, the reference site for the EM is on-line.

Extended Matrix is

.. a formal language with which to keep track of virtual reconstruction processes. It is intended to be used by archaeologists and heritage specialists to document in a robust way their scientific activities. It organises 3D archaeological record so that the 3D modelling steps are smoother, transparent and scientifically complete. It has been developed by E. Demetrescu at CNR-ITABC (Rome).

The site provides resources, news, exercises, video tutorial and quick reference sheets.
